RTX Launches the DUALphone 4088 Cordless Skype Phone [published on 2012-02-01] RTX is launching a combined SkypeT and landline phone. The new cordless phone, the DUALphone 4088, is being launched at ITEXPO in Miami.

The main benefit of the DUALphone 4088 is that it does not require the user to be physically connected to a PC to make VoIP calls. The caller can simply connect the DUALphone base station to a broadband connection and make Skype calls free of charge to other Skype users or have the choice of conventional paid-for landline calls worldwide.

At a time when the number of Skype calls is soaring, RTX says it expects the new handset to bring free and low cost calls to consumers worldwide. According to a recent report by telecom market research firm TeleGeography, cross-border Skype-to-Skype calls grew 48 percent in 2011, to 145 billion minutes.

Jesper Mailind CEO RTX commented, "Our new elegant DUALphone 4088 offers consumers a unique way to use Skype, bringing the benefits of wireless low cost or free calls to households across the globe at an affordable price-point. We believe there is a growing demand for dual phones from the existing 170 million Skype account holders. As more and more people use Skype our user-friendly and intuitive phone will be an attractive solution. It will also provide a business opportunity for resellers around the world."

The new handset has a colour TFT screen and superior sound quality through the use of high definition Audio. The phone system can switch between two separate Skype accounts and can be extended to four handsets per household. Standard features including call waiting, voicemail and a phone contact list of 200 numbers have been enhanced by software to show the Skype status of the user and all contacts. The design of DUALphone 4088 is suitable for the modern living room.

DIGITALK Introduces Integrated Mobile VoIP Client to Consumer Applications [published on 2012-02-01] Digitalk_logo.jpg DIGITALK announces a new, fully integrated, Mobile VoIP Client on the DIGITALK Consumer Platform, enabling service providers to offer mobile dialling to their Prepaid Cards and Broadband Telephony customers over Wifi and 3G /4G networks.

The development comes in light of the continuing growth of mobile subscribers with smartphones and improved Wifi access globally, enabling calling card and residential IP service providers to exploit extensions to current services and promotions. With many users having inclusive data packages, mobile VoIP is a now a substantial opportunity for prepaid and residential IP telephony service providers to expand their service reach to mobile smartphone users.

The DIGITALK Mobile VoIP Client is SIP-compliant and supports G.729 and G.711 codecs, with optional signalling and media encryption and compression. The client will be locked to the service provider, protecting revenue loss from transient users and enhancing overall customer loyalty with new service features.

The client preserves familiar features with other DIGITALK applications such as PIN-based registration for calling cards or standard SIP user name and password registration for Broadband Telephony customers. Dialling from the phone's contact list, call history, and balance presentation all add to the ease of use of the application, further enhancing the user experience.

To simplify the introduction of the DIGITALK Mobile VoIP Client for service providers, DIGITALK supports branding of the client with the service provider's logo and colour scheme and introduction of the client to the Apple and Android App stores - enabling easy and rapid download and access to the client.

DIGITALK will be demonstrating the Mobile Client at ITEXPO 31st Jan-3rd Feb at Miami Convention Center booth 629.

Three in UK Simplifies PrePaid on for Unlocked iPhone Users [published on 2012-02-04] I needed to pick up a local SIM for a friend visiting the UK in a month or so, and the carrier of choice for me when it comes to a single country SIM in the UK is usually 3. Their plain language approach and, now a new 15 pound a month plan for voice--300 minutes, text-3000 and all you can eat data for 30 days, is just plain, dumb, simple. Buy the pack at a 3 shop, dial 444 on your iPhone, wait five minutes and your connected. Honestly, this is the type of plan AT&T needs to offer...
Deskphone or Tablet? You Decide [published on 2012-02-02] Yesterday the Medill Reports Ben Shamisso penned a piece regarding the war of attrititon between the legacy deskphone and their looming replacements-smartphones and tablets. In the story both CounterPath's SVP Todd Carothers and I were quoted. My view is centered around the concept of utility. People will simply get more use out of a tablet based communications hub than the standard desk phones. It one of the reasons why Cloud TC and Panasonic both are making desk phones based upon the Android OS. An iPad in a Gorrilla stand makes for a very good desk phone already. So will Android...
Read Martin Geddes Latest Post-Your Job My Be At Stake If You Don't [published on 2012-01-27] If you haven't read pal Martin Geddes latest post on the Future of Communications entitled Peak Telecom, you are missing something that is likely either something you have likely said, thought, heard someone say in private or really wished you had. It's a stunningly brilliant piece of writing that leads you to wonder, "what is Martin going to say next" as you read through it. This post is every bit as important as Alec Saunders 2005 post entitled The Voice 2.0 Manifesto in my opinion as far as laying things out or the famed Pulver Purple Minutes post. It is...
Video Conferencing Is Heating Up, The Established Will Be Challenged [published on 2012-01-27] Image via CrunchBase Just as we're seeing Over the Top (OTT) in voice and data service impacting the legacy mobile operators and telcos, there's also a movement afoot thats going to challenge the legacy video conferencing providers like BT, Verizon, Glowpoint (I'm a shareholder) and the rest who have been in the business of white glove video conferncing services, operating exchanges or hosting bridging services. Yesterday pal Larry Lisser, who is known in the telecom industry as the person to go to to revive sales, penned a post supportive of disruptive Silicon Valley startup, Vidtel (a Comunicano client) who are...
Why I'm Excited About Next Week's IT Expo [published on 2012-01-26] There's one reason I'm excited about IT Expo. It's called Startup Camp. Startup Camp is perhaps the most relevant example of what is really happening in the telecom and tech world today at the twice annual confernence. For the past four StartUpCamp they have had standing room only crowds, and key speakers iincluding startup luminaries and legends Craig Walker (GrandCentral), Bob Metcalf (father of Ethernet, 3COM), Jamie Siminoff (Simulscribe, Unsubscibe) and Jeff Bonforte (Gizmo, Yahoo Voice, Xobni). This year will have Sir Terry Matthews (NewBridge Networks, Mitel) as the keynote offering a neat perspective from years of experience nurturing and...

Nokia Hello: communicate via NFC with people you hate to speak with [published on 2012-02-03] A Nokia research project called Nokia Hello leverages wireless technology with Near Field Communications (NFC) chips to help people "speak" to each other. I figured it would be a good solution when speaking to someone in a non-native language (it is), but Nokia suggests another use.
